How To Prepare For an In-Home Newborn Portrait Session

In-home lifestyle newborn sessions allow your family to capture the arrival of your new baby in the comfort of your home.

You might have a few questions of what to expect when considering an in-home newborn session.  Read on to get an overview to see if it will suit your family.

What Time of Day Do I Shoot an Indoor Session?

When taking pictures inside a home, the best time to do the session is midday. 10am-2pm is usually the best time to take advantage of the natural daylight.

Where Will We Take Pictures?

When I do an at-home newborn session I like to use rooms with a lot of natural light. Big windows with open blinds and shades will give a soft and airy look to your images.

During a lifestyle newborn session, I like to use a bedroom or living room and nursery. If we are in a bedroom having a white or light neutral comforter on your bed is ideal for supporting a clean and bright aesthetic.

How Do I Prepare My Home For A Portrait Session?

I know the days with a newborn can be stressful and tiring. Your home is most probably a little cluttered and you are having a hard time keeping up with household chores. Please do not stress, you do not need to clean your entire home. However, it will be very helpful to declutter and straighten up the rooms we will be using for the session. Please take time to remove items from bedside tables, such as books, Kleenex boxes, bottles, glasses, breast pumps, etc.

What Style Of Images Can I Expect From A Newborn Lifestyle Portrait Session?

The newborn images I capture will show your baby in natural positions, not overly posed with props.  My aim is to produce images that are natural, not forced or uncomfortable or unsafe.  Imagine images of your newborn cradled in your arms, sleeping in their crib or snuggled with big brother or sister.

What Should I Wear For A Newborn Portrait Session?

Your new baby is the star of the show. Most newborn lifestyle sessions are shot with a light and airy style, so find elements in your home and wardrobe that will compliment this vibe.

1. Neturals
Choose clothing that creates a neutral palate.  This does not mean you need to stick with white, but avoid busy patterns and bright colors.  Try to use gray, navy, tan, white, ivory, soft blue, pink for example.  Choose approximately three colors that compliment one another.

2. Flow & Texture
Fabric that moves and flows is most flattering to a new mom. Try to find clothes with texture as this photographs nicely, by adding visual appeal, but does not distract from the photos.  If you are conscious of your postpartum body, consider clothes with an a-line silhouette, these help to define your wait, but still flatter your tummy.
