Choosing & Coordinating Outfits For A Family Photo Session

Coordinating outfits for the family photo session does not need to be stressful. This task can be easy to tackle with a few suggestions.

  1. I always suggest mom chooses her outfit first and then coordinate the other family members around her style and color scheme. I want my moms to feel beautiful and comfortable in what they are wearing.

  2. You can explore your family’s closets or use the photo session as an excuse to do some shopping.  I find it easier to shop on my own and have the various clothes with me so I can see how the pieces coordinate. I typically pick up a couple of outfits for each child so they can have a choice in outfits and then return the clothes we do not use.

  3. Choose 2-3 colors to coordinate across all members in the family.  This will give your gallery a natural look and each member has the chance to express themselves

  4. Accessorize!  You can easily tie in a color with a headband, belt, jewelry or scarf.

  5. Use Layers - adding a sweater or cute jacket can add interest and options for your gallery.

  6. Keep it simple and try to avoid clothes with logos or large busy patterns (subtle patterns are great) these elements can be distracting. In addition, you will have these pictures for years to come and you want the outfits to appear timeless.

  7. Still unsure about your outfit choices? Maybe you need to talk it out? I always encourage my clients to send me pictures of the outfit options so we can discuss the choices further. This gives me insight into your style and personality.  I'm here to help! Every little interaction we have before the session lets me connect with you little more!

  8. In the end, make sure you are comfortable.  The clothes and outfits you choose should reflect your family's style!
