How to Select Outfits For Your Senior Portrait Session.

Style and wardrobe are a key way for a high school senior to express his or her personality.  So taking the time to plan out your outfit options for your senior portrait session is essential to creating variety in your gallery and capturing your true style.  Your wardrobe options will set the tone for your session.

Here are 8 tips to consider when pulling together your different looks for your session.  They will let us create fun and edgy images you will want to post and share with your friends, but also keep your parents or grandparents happy with safe and traditional images they want to print, frame and display.

MONOCHROMATIC LOOK This casual look is composed by pairing a plain white or black fitted shirt with a pair of jeans, shorts or skirt.  The shirt can be long sleeve or short. You can find black body suits with stylish/interesting backs. This look can be elevated with texture such as ribbing, or finish details such as buttons or stylish ruffles at shoulders and/or hem.

PATTERNS  You could do a floral/flowy dress if that's your style. Maxi dress, mini romper or blouse paired with fitted pants are great items to pull in this light, flirty and flowing vibe.  A lightweight fabric will bring color and movement to your images and add interest to your poses. If florals aren't your jam, consider pieces with more structure, such as plaids and stripes. A plaid min-skirt or fitted high-waist pants paired with a plain top will bring in some interest to your gallery.

STYLIZED OR THEMED  Want to have some fun and show your artistic flair? Have you noticed something on social media that you think would be fun to recreate? Let’s do it. Consider two piece matching sets to bring a stylized look to your session. Bright colors, fun accessories (hats, jewelry or glasses), lollipops and food, bikes or boards. Let your creative side flow!

DRESS OR ROMPER These are fantastic for bringing motion and energy to your gallery.  You can class them up or make them casual.

TEXTURE  Try for a variety of textures in the pieces you include for your session.  A plain shirt with a ribbed texture, a jacket with faux fur, light flowy fabric, buttons, stylish ruffles or structured layers will add interest to your outfits.

VARIETY Mix up your outfits with pants, dresses, rompers and jackets. Have a casual relaxed look as well as a dressier option.

THE FIT Make sure your waist is defined with a belt or tie.  It is very important to define your waist as this gives your body shape and definition.  While baggy and oversized outfits are comfy and might be part of your regular look, they do not flatter your body in photographs. Try on all your outfits in front of a mirror. Send me screenshots and I can weigh-in. Can you easily move, sit and squat? This will allow for variety in your posing options.

SHOES & ACCESSORIES A pair of white shoes for your casual looks, heels and boots will add some height and elevate a dressier look. Keep accessories subtle and understated so images focus on you and your style.  Consider going flashier if you have a themed or stylized look.
