Memorable Senior Portraits For Mom’s of High School Guys

Moms, you want a few more images than what you will get in a standard studio headshot session, right? You might want some more candid images that capture his personality, interests and style.  The end of High School is a milestone that is worth documenting. These are the last years they will be with you as much as they are. This is a time you want to remember.

Do you want your son to have a high school portrait session? Is he a little reluctant? Here is how you can prepare him for a successful session.

Emphasize the Importance of the Milestone: Remind him this is a significant milestone in his life.  He might not see the importance of capturing this moment and preserving this time with photographs, but you do! Get him to understand the sentimental value of having tangible memories to look back on in the future.

Encourage Meaningful Locations: Involve your son in choosing locations that hold personal significance for him. Whether it's a favorite hangout spot, a sports field, or a natural setting, incorporating meaningful locations will make the session more enjoyable and authentic for your son. If location isn't a priority, have a conversation with him to determine the elements he would like to include in the background. Should the gallery have an urban vibe? Or nature? Near the waterfront? This will help narrow down the location.

Focus on His Personality, Interests, and Style: While standard headshots are important, aim to capture candid images that showcase your son's personality, interests, and style. An easy way to do this is discuss outfit options with him, ensuring they reflect his style, he feels comfortable and confident in his chosen attire. Consider two to three different options, one could be more professional to capture the classic tailored look and be used as a headshot.  If he played a sport or was a member of a school club, another outfit could feature a shirt or jacket.  Does he know what school he is going to? Maybe consider a few images with a school shirt.  Don’t forget to include and outfit that reflects his laidback and casual look.

Another suggestion is to include  props or accessories that reflect his hobbies or passions, adding a personal touch to the portraits. This senior worked hard and saved up for his car. It was simple to include it in a few images.

Be a Supportive Facilitator: Often, the moms take charge of communicating with me about logistics, outfit ideas, and location choices. This is totally fine, however, remember to involve your son in the decision-making process. Seek his input, listen to his preferences, and respect his comfort level throughout the planning and execution of the session.

Signs to Consider: If you suspect that your son will feel uncomfortable or have difficulty relaxing in front of the camera, it's essential to respect his boundaries. Forcing the experience may lead to unnecessary stress and yield unsatisfactory results. In such cases, it's perfectly fine to opt for a few in-studio yearbook pictures to fulfill the requirement while still honoring your son's comfort level.

While high school senior portraits may be more commonly associated with girls, it's entirely possible to plan a successful and enjoyable session for your high school son. By emphasizing the importance of the milestone, involving him in decision-making, and respecting his comfort level, you can ensure a memorable and meaningful senior portrait experience that both you and your son will cherish for years to come.
